Lutetium is the heaviest rare earth element. It is also the hardest and has the highest melting point. It is commercially refined in small concentrations from monazite and is very expensive.

Uses:

Catalyst for industrial processes including petroleum cracking, alkylation, hydrogenation, and polymerization.

Used in positron emission tomography (PET) scanners.
